Recording Yourself Singing Karaoke

Karaoke makes it easy to sing since the lyrics are right in front of you. I think that singing is important for us as human beings. I find it can boost your ego. It also helps to release stress and it makes us feel better.

I always had a desire to sing but I didn't share it much with anyone. Some friends knew but for some reason I didn't sing among family members.

My mother liked to sing, but I grew up noticing that she only sang when she thought she was alone.

My sister sang with her friends, but I didn’t know that until later in life when I stumbled upon an old recording she had made with a friend of hers. She said she didn’t think she had a voice. She was not always in key, but I feel bad for her that she didn’t appreciate what talent she did have.

She should have continued it. My sister had her own kind of talent and it was nice that she had saved it in a recording.

There are ways to improve over time and one way is to hear yourself in a recording. This can be accomplished privately if one so desires. No need to share it if you don't feel secure about it. But it's pleasant to do it for yourself. If nothing else, just to hear what you sound like.

Only professional singers know how to control their voice, have perfect pitch, harmonize, and stay in key. But singing for our own satisfaction does not have to be professional.

Sing To Music With The Words In Front Of You

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Throughout life, I secretly recorded myself singing. At the beginning these were all a cappella (without the music accompaniment) because at the time I didn’t have recordings of my favorite songs without the lead singer. So I just recorded without the music. Very few people actually heard these recordings.

Later in life I befriended a number of people who were into singing. We sang at several karaoke venues. And we also had private karaoke parties. We followed along with the music and I found that the musical energy really made us feel good about ourselves. And it was fun to imitate the lead singer of professional bands.

I eventually purchased a Karaoke machine and a large library of special CD’s that play the background music without the lead singer. When singing Karaoke you sing the lead singers part and you have the background singers accompany you along with the music.

The Karaoke CD’s are known as CDG, they include the lyrics for on-screen display in sync with the music. But they only play on CDG players, so you need a Karaoke machine to play them. But they are readily available on Amazon and eBay.

Singing With Friends

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Singing Karaoke got me into singing more often with friends. Some friends even say I can carry a tune quite well.

I’m no professional, but when listening to my recorded singing, I think my friends are right. Sometimes I can’t hit the highs or lows and I laugh at myself. It’s fun to laugh at it.

The point is that we make the attempt. Anyone who intimidates you or puts you down is a fool. Don’t take it personally. You can know it in your heart that these are the kind of people who can’t do things right. They know it too and they feel bad about themselves, so they put other people down.

Don’t let these types of people stop you. Sing. Sing with anyone you wish. And don’t be intimidated.

Recording Yourself Singing

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Singing Karaoke can boost your ego. And having a recoding of yourself singing that you can listen to later in life is enjoyable. A good quality recording is a great way to save your memories.

I record myself with the help of Karaoke for the background music. If you are still at the stage of this being your deep, dark, secret, then no problem. No one has to know. You can do this on your own, so you don’t need to worry what people think.

You can actually benefit by listening to your own recording and noticing where you need improvement. Some people are tone deaf. But that is basically true while one is singing. I think some tone deaf people can actually notice the error when they listen to their own recording. You can tell if you are off key when you listen to it later.

If you want to have a good quality recording, go to a local electronics store and ask to see microphones that connect to your computer that give you a studio quality sound. I use the Zoom H2.

I found this special recorder while searching for something that gave me a better sound quality. It has four built-in mics for stereo and 360° recording. It records to a flash memory card and creates WAV or MP3 files that can be transferred to your computer using the USB port.

Karaoke On Your Computer

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There are karaoke programs available that you can install on your computer. I use a few of these too. You can see the lyrics on the screen as the background music plays. They play MIDI Karaoke files that can be purchased or downloaded free with a search. Go to download.com and search for “Karaoke Software.” Many are freeware.

Feel Better About Yourself

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you have the same strong feeling as I do, and like me, you sing by yourself but you really wish you had the courage to share that with others, then pick one or two close friends to start with, and try your hand at Karaoke.

It will make you feel better about yourself. Singing does that. And it’s a great stress release when you’ve had a hard day.

Thanks for sharing your story Glenn. Good advice also about recording yourself. Although for many people to hear a recording of themselves is difficult to do, it does provide good feedback on what is good, and what needs improvement. And double good advice about getting a decent microphone. The typical microphone included with a laptop is of poor quality, and the poor sound reproduction such a microphone gives can be discouraging for the starting singer, but a half decent microphone will be helpful. Cheers!

meech741, I know exactly what you mean about using a good microphone. That Zoom H2 mic that I mentioned in the article makes a big difference in how one sounds. Thanks for your informative comments.
